Course overview

The First Aid Response Recertification/Refresher training  is designed for participants who already hold a PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) certificate and are required to renew their qualification.

This recertification/refresher training programme ensures workplace first aiders remain competent, confident and compliant with current legal requirements under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations 2007.

The course revisits all core First Aid Response competencies, provides updates in line with current best practice, and includes both theoretical and practical assessment to meet PHECC standards.

Participants must hold a current or recently expired PHECC First Aid Response certificate.

Participants will revise and demonstrate competence in:

  • Patient assessment
  • Cardiac First Response (community level)
  • Management of common medical emergencies
  • Injury management and shock
  • Care of the unconscious patient
  • Burns and electrical injury care
  • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
  • Information management and incident reporting
  • Communication and clinical handover
  • Wellbeing of the first aid responder

Training is practical, structured and scenario-based, reinforcing safe decision-making and effective response.

Assessment

Assessment is completed through:

  • Multiple choice questions (MCQ)
  • Practical skills assessment

Successful completion of both components is required for certification.

Participants are recommended to be 16 years of age or older.

How long is the in-person FAR Refresher course?

The in-person PHECC FAR Refresher / Recertification course is delivered over 2 days / 12 hours.

Is a blended FAR Refresher course available?

Yes. A blended FAR Refresher course may be available where permitted. This usually includes an online theory component followed by one in-person practical training and assessment day and is delivered in conjunction with UFAS.

How does the blended FAR Refresher course work?

The blended FAR Refresher course allows learners to complete online theory before attending the in-person practical session. The classroom day focuses on skills practice, scenarios, assessment and renewal of key first aid response competencies.

How many in-person days are required for blended FAR Refresher training?

Blended FAR Refresher training can reduce the classroom element to one in-person day, where blended delivery is available and suitable.

Is the blended refresher the same qualification as the in-person refresher?

Yes. Where delivered through the correct recognised route, the blended FAR Refresher leads to the same PHECC First Aid Response recertification as the full in-person refresher course.

What happens if my FAR certificate has expired?

If your FAR certificate has expired, please contact us before booking. We can confirm whether you are eligible for the refresher/recertification course or whether you need to complete the full FAR course again.

How long do I have to renew my FAR certificate?

Normally, learners who recertify within 30 days of the expiry of their responder-level certificate can undertake the shorter recertification course. If you are unsure, contact us before booking.

What topics are revised on the FAR Refresher course?

The refresher course revises key FAR skills including patient assessment, incident procedure, CPR, AED use, choking, stroke, heart attack, medical emergencies, bleeding, injuries, shock, burns, care of the unconscious casualty, communications and handover.

Does the FAR Refresher include CPR and AED practice?

Yes. CPR and AED practice are included as part of the FAR Refresher / Recertification course.

How long is the renewed FAR certificate valid?

On successful completion, the renewed PHECC First Aid Response certificate is valid for 2 years.

Do I need to bring my existing FAR certificate?

Yes. Learners should have details of their existing FAR certificate available when booking. You may be asked to provide your certificate details or expiry date before the course.

Can a workplace book group FAR Refresher training?

Yes. We provide group FAR Refresher / Recertification training for workplaces and organisations. This can be arranged on-site or at an agreed training location.

Can the FAR Refresher be delivered on-site?

Yes. Group FAR Refresher training can be delivered on-site, subject to suitable facilities, learner numbers and course requirements.

What is the learner-to-instructor ratio?

PHECC FAR Refresher training is delivered in line with the required instructor-to-learner ratio. The maximum ratio is one instructor to eight learners.

How do I know whether to book the full FAR course or the refresher?

If you have never completed FAR training, you need the full PHECC FAR course. If you already hold a valid or recently expired PHECC FAR certificate, you may be eligible for the FAR Refresher / Recertification course. Contact us if you are unsure.
